He had already been battling his own demons, trying to figure out how to heal from the trauma of his youth, and now, he was supposed to be the rock for someone else. He couldn’t shake the fear that his past would somehow taint the love he had for Malik—that he would be unable to give his son the kind of stable life he deserved.

It wasn’t until one quiet evening in late spring that Marcus was forced to confront the depths of his insecurities as a father. He had just returned from a long day at work, his mind preoccupied with a myriad of thoughts. He stepped into his small apartment, greeted by the sound of Malik’s laughter coming from the living room. The boy was playing with his toys, the innocent joy that only children seemed to radiate filling the space.

Malik looked up as Marcus entered, his eyes lighting up. “Daddy! You home!” he exclaimed, rushing toward him with arms outstretched.

Marcus bent down, scooping Malik into his arms and holding him close. The weight of his son in his arms reminded him of what was truly important. But as they sat together on the couch, Malik resting his head on Marcus’ shoulder, Marcus couldn’t shake the doubts that lingered in the back of his mind.

He had promised himself that he wouldn’t be like the fathers who had abandoned him—he wouldn’t repeat the mistakes of his own father, who had been an absent figure in his life. But the fear of failure was a constant companion, whispering to him that he wasn’t enough. What if his son grew up resenting him? What if he was destined to fail as a father, just like he had failed in so many other areas of his life?

Malik, sensing the tension in his father’s body, looked up at him with innocent eyes. “Daddy, you sad?”

Marcus blinked, surprised by the question. “No, baby, I’m just thinking,” he replied, forcing a smile. But Malik’s eyes never wavered, and Marcus could see that his son wasn’t fooled.

“You sad ‘bout me?” Malik asked, his voice small but full of concern.
